MyTunesRSS 4.2.4

MyTunesRSS Editor's Review

MyTunesRSS is an application that allows you to access your iTunes library from any computer connected to the network.

The application automatically generates a database that contains all the items that you can find in your iTunes Media Library. After that, the application launches a Tomcat HTTP server, which you can access from every computer within the network.

There are just a couple of requirements for this application. The first one is Java, in order to run the Tomcat server and the second is iTunes in order to create the database. The application gives you the possibility to change the listening port of the server from the default 8080. The server is password protected, allowing you to be the only one that can access the database.

Since the 3rd version, MyTunesRSS supports multiple user accounts. You can use up to three users in the free version, or you can go for the registered version which supports unlimited accounts. This is also a new thing in the new version as the 2nd version used to be completely free. The producer allows you to use the "lite" version without any time limits, and it just has fewer features. You can find the differences on the producer's Website.

You can always access the server if it's set up and running. The application shows your private IPs (if you are using them) and/or the external IP in order to know exactly which address you have to access. Using the DNS makes it even easier, if you are connected to the Internet.

Once you're password authenticated, you have to provide first the server configuration, and then you can browse your Media Library. The server gives you nice options, such as the possibility to get a RSS feed with the tracks from a certain play list or genre.

This is not all. The great part is the possibility to generate dynamically M3U playlists that you can use when streaming your Media Library items through the network. Moreover, if you would like a copy of a file, you can download it right away. The server automatically creates a ZIP archive and you can find the track that you want to download within that archive.

As you can see from the requirements, another nice thing about this application is the fact that it's cross-platform. You can use any player to listen to the generated stream from the server, for example use VLC if you would like to view a video from your Media Library.

Pluses: it is a nice cross-platform method that allows you to access your iTunes Media Library. It has some great features such as RSS, M3U play lists, and the possibility to download tracks that automatically are archived within a ZIP file. It provides you a powerful Web interface with the possibility to search the items, or group them by various methods.

Drawbacks / flaws:

In conclusion: This is one of the best tools that allows you to access multimedia items through a network. It has nice features and increased flexibility.
